Wipak are certainly not the (veggi) wurst

Updated: Sep 9, 2020

Wipak has won a sustainability award at a recent German Packaging Awards.

Green Haven, an innovative packaging solution for veggi-wurst vegetarian sausages, was recognised in the Sustainability category for balancing recyclability with protection and production efficiency. The newly developed vacuum packaging is composed of two adhesive-free, unprinted PE films, forming a mono-material. It also supports Wipak’s invisible watermark barcode, Digimarc, which can be quickly scanned with any smart device. This facilitates customer access to product ingredients and nutritional data, as well as the sorting of different packaging components at recycling centres.

An FSC-certified paper banderole, easily separated from the main plastic body and disposed of alongside paper waste, completes the Green Haven concept. The plastic content remains unprinted, ensuring material quality stays high even after recycling.

The result is a 90% PE-based mono-material that is easy to use and recycle, with an overall carbon footprint reduction of up to 30%.

Dr. Bettina Horenburg, Member of the Executive Board and overall responsible person for the German Packaging Awards at the German Packaging Institute, said; 'We had a very strong, international field of participants with innovative solutions from Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and Turkey. 40 per cent of the innovations submitted fall into the sustainability category. This shows how important this fundamental topic is and remains, even through the current pandemic'.
