Last year, Marigold Health Foods switched to Sonoco’s fully recyclable paper based can made from 95% paper, including 60% post consumer recycled paper content, to deliver strong product protection while making recycling easier for consumers.

Marigold Health Foods wanted to transition to a recyclable paper based format. The previous packaging, which featured a cardboard body with a metal base, presented recycling challenges. Marigold has now replaced the metal end with a paper based alternative, resulting in a next generation, all paper body and base.

Sonoco’s Paper Bottom Can ensures food safety and optimal shelf life performance by providing an oxygen and moisture barrier. With more than a 20% reduction in packaging weight, Marigold has also been able to drastically decrease its transport fuel consumption. The packaging solution also boasts a lower environmental footprint than other rigid packaging types, while being produced from sustainably sourced, recyclable materials. And, it can be easily recycled by consumers after consumption.

In collaboration with Sonoco, Marigold Health Foods won a Bronze trophy at the Environmental Packaging Awards 2025 for Sustainable Brand of the Year due to its support for the circular economy, as the packaging can be recycled in the UK’s paper waste stream and features the latest OPRL recycling logo to guide consumers to recycle their packaging correctly.
