UPM Specialty Materials and Royal Vaassen have introduced an ultra high barrier paper packaging solution suitable for pet food treats and snacks. As the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) introduces stricter PFAS requirements, brand owners need solutions they can rely on. This PFAS free, recyclable fibre based packaging solution supports compliance with regulatory requirements without compromising performance or brand value.

Pet treats are often oily and aromatic and have traditionally relied on plastic or aluminium laminates or papers with PFAS based grease barrier. Royal Vaassen’s fibre based Barryrwrap concept does not compromise the performance required for such a demanding end use, the solution is designed to meet the strictest requirements, including aroma, grease, light, moisture and oxygen barriers.

‘Barrywrap Everest is the highest performance barrier in our range, suitable for premium pet treats. It preserves freshness, aroma, and taste throughout shelf life. It enables pet food brands to replace traditional aluminium laminates with a more sustainable, circular packaging solution – without compromising on performance, food safety, or a premium consumer experience,’ explained Mark Gerritsen, sales manager, Royal Vaassen.

UPM Solide Lucent packaging paper provides an ideal foundation for high barrier, PFAS free Barryrwrap solutions. Its excellent convertibility, combined with exceptional surface smoothness and high density, allows low coating weights while delivering the strength needed for efficient performance on high speed lines. A range of grammages is available to meet different application needs.

‘With its smooth surface and consistent quality, Solide Lucent delivers reliable printability that helps brand owners achieve strong shelf impact. Its natural paper look and feel enhances the overall packaging experience, helping brands communicate sustainability in a way that resonate with today’s sustainability minded consumers,’ said Heli Borgström, director, packaging, UPM Specialty Materials.

Safe for food contact and compliant with recyclability requirements, Barryrwrap solutions and UPM Solide Lucent base paper will be on display at UPM Specialty Materials’ stand F29, hall 8A at Interpack, Düsseldorf, Germany, May 7 to 13.
