Packaging design company Burgopak has been appointed by print production agency Cousin to create packaging for Salt! Supplements’ new hydration supplements.

Salt! was founded by athletes and competitors Alfonso Iovine and Kim Connor Streich, who were frustrated by the lack of effective hydration products on the market. Driven by this disappointment, they created Salt! Supplements to develop the electrolyte product they had always wanted.

The brief for Burgopak was to create premium packaging for the brand’s 15 stick supplement sachets, that would make a strong impression from the opening moment.

Burgopak’s design team utilised one of its proprietary Coupe packs, that minimises dead space – the supplement sticks completely fill the space inside. The materials and design were optimised for efficient use and practical strength.

The tray is designed to present the stick packs at an angle – they lie on their long edge, staggered against each other. This carefully considered layout creates a visually interesting presentation with improved dimensions proportions – not too long, not too deep.

Burgopak designed a number of prototypes to find the best way to present the sachets in this way and also hold them in place through transport. The dimensions of the pack were optimised to meet Royal Mail large letter requirements for favourable shipping rates – helping to minimise the overall cost of goods.

A simple paperboard mailer wraps around the pack, ensuring that the products are delivered in one piece and the pack inside can be kept by the recipient and used to dispense the sachets.

Dane Whitehurst, creative director, Burgopak, said: ‘Every detail, from the angled sachet presentation to the optimised dimensions for Royal Mail shipping, balances visual engagement with cost effective practicality.’

Lee Godwin, development director, Cousin, said: ‘We have worked with the Burgopak team in the past and knew they would be the perfect partner for this project. It was a seamless collaboration and the packaging wholly reflects the quality of the product inside.’

Alfonso Iovine, co-founder, Salt!, said: ‘It was essential that the packaging would be both appealing and functional for sportspeople. The feedback we are receiving is very positive and we are excited about supporting as many athletes as possible to reach peak performance.’

The packaging is made from 265 g/m2 Metsaboard Pro FBB Bright.
