Parkside has partnered with French packaging company Ness Emballages and fresh produce supplier Lilot Fruits to develop a high performance home compostable lidding film for avocados.
The bio based film is specifically designed to protect sensitive produce like avocados when sealed to fibre based trays. It offers superb transparency for enhanced aesthetic appeal, outperforming existing recyclable coated or opaque paper lidding options. Crucially, the film also supports respiration performance, improving product protection for perishable fruits and vegetables through the supply chain.
At end of life, the film can be composted in a domestic composting heap, where it will break down within 26 weeks in normal conditions, or sent to an industrial composting facility, where it will break down within 12 weeks.
Conor Molyneaux, sales account manager at Parkside, was delighted at the commercialisation, saying: ‘Sustainability is the defining challenge for European food producers as legislation like PPWR continues to evolve. It is especially pleasing for us to support our partners in overcoming that challenge with futureproof innovations like this.
‘It offers strong, credible sustainability credentials that can be clearly communicated at point of sale when businesses need that most. And it does so while delivering the premium look and feel that consumers expect without using conventional fossil fuel based plastics.’
Parkside has tailored the film to ensure it runs and seals smoothly on customers’ packing lines, removing any barriers to the adoption of fibre based trays and compostable films.
The film is based on an existing, approved, and popular structure that is exclusively available through Parkside.
