Two new California wines have launched in Frugalpac's paper Frugal Bottle as the US market continues to embrace more sustainable alternatives to traditional glass packaging.

Petalscape, a new wine label from direct to consumer wine store Scout & Cellar, which is part of the Full Glass Wine Co, has launched a 2025 Sauvignon Blancand NV Red Blend in the Frugal Bottle, offering consumers a lower carbon way to enjoy premium California wines.

The bottles were produced in King City, California by Monterey Wine Company using the Frugal Bottle Assembly Machine, designed and supplied by British sustainable packaging company Frugalpac.

The launch marks another significant milestone for the Frugal Bottle in the United States, following its adoption by leading retailers such Target, 7-Eleven, Whole Foods and Total Wine & More as well as US wine producers as demand grows for more sustainable beverage packaging.

Made from 94% recycled paperboard with a food grade pouch, the Frugal Bottle is five times lighter than a standard glass wine bottle and has a carbon footprint up to 84% lower than glass.

It also uses around five times less water and energy to manufacture than conventional glass bottles.

Scout & Cellar is a ‘better for you’ wine brand in the United States, producing wine to its ‘Clean-Crafted’ standards with a strong focus on sustainability, making it an ideal partner for the Frugal Bottle.

Malcolm Waugh, CEO of Frugalpac, said: ‘We are delighted to see another innovative US wine brand choosing the Frugal Bottle. Petalscape demonstrates that premium wines and sustainable packaging can go hand in hand, giving consumers a genuine alternative to traditional glass bottles.

‘The United States continues to be one of our fastest growing markets, with more wineries recognising that reducing packaging emissions is an important part of building a more sustainable wine industry.’

Louis Amoroso, CEO, of Full Glass Wine Co, said: ‘Petalscape was created to offer consumers a more sustainable wine experience without compromising on quality. The Frugal Bottle aligns perfectly with that vision by significantly reducing the environmental impact of packaging while delivering outstanding California wines.

‘The launch builds on the growing adoption of the Frugal Bottle across the US wine industry, where brands are increasingly looking for lower carbon packaging solutions that are lighter to transport, easier to handle and designed for a circular economy.’

Shannon Valladarez, general manager at Monterey Wine Company, said: ‘As the first company in the United States to produce Frugal Bottles locally, it is incredible to watch major brands like Scout & Cellar embrace paper packaging.

‘Producers are realising that sustainability in the vineyard must carry through to the packaging on the shelf. Manufacturing and filling the Petalscape bottles here in King City proves that high volume, lower carbon packaging is no longer just a trend, it is the future of American wine.’
